Not only is it elegantly designed right into the instrument panel, but it operates much better than aftermarket controllers, making it easier to modulate the brakes for smooth, accurate stops. fresh styling gives the 2005 ford super duty pickups a more masculine, big-rig appearance. Inspired by ford's tonka truck concept, the new super duty trucks look like they're ready to get some serious work done. Payload capacities of up to 5800 pounds are available in the 2005 super duty trucks, with tow ratings of up to 17,000 pounds. The ford f-250 super duty competes with the dodge ram 2500, chevrolet silverado 2500, and gmc sierra 2500. The f-350, with its available dual rear wheels, competes against the 3500-series models from gm and dodge. None of these, however, match the super duty's top payload and towing capacities. the 2005 super duty pickups continue to feature first-class powertrains. Both of the v8 gas engines are upgraded for 2005. The standard 5. 4-liter v8 is now based on ford's modular v8 architecture and incorporates three valves per cylinder for better breathing, improved power delivery and cleaner exhaust. Also, towcommand requires the automatic transmission. the fx4 off-road package 225) adds skid plates and rancho shock absorbers; the steering damper. walkaroundford bestowed on the 2004 f-150 much of the brawny, no-nonsense look we liked about the previous generation of the company's f-250 and f-350 pickups. This meant the 2005 super duty line had to have its own spruced up, new look. The lower front fascia is beefier, too, adding to the impression of mass in motion. otherwise, the styling of the 2005 models doesn't differ much from the 2004s. The cab's dropped sill line gives it a sense of openness and accessibility. It also makes climbing in easier, a welcome feature when juggling tools, briefcases, or even toddlers. A distinctive dip along the front door side glass improves the driver's view of the exterior mirrors, a big help when towing a trailer or for seeing around cargo boxes or dump-truck bodies. A locking tailgate is standard. king ranch crew cabs are dressed up with body-color mirror housings and door handles and distinctive two-tone paint selections, lighted running boards and special king ranch aluminum wheels. The harley-davidson specials sport a unique, tautly meshed grille; color choices consist of black, black and orange, and black and gray; factory-applied flame graphics are a new option 675). the tow hitch receiver has been increased from 2 inches to 2 1/2 inches for increased towing capacity. interiorford super duty trucks are very roomy, with comfortable, spacious seats and plenty of hip and shoulder room. truck owners spend a lot of time in their vehicles, so ford's interior designers paid a lot of attention to comfort and convenience. The standard interior features a fold-down armrest, a floor console that can accommodate a laptop, and a removable hanging storage bin that can attach to the dash. Even the standard bench seats recline. Two large cupholders are provided. The standard cigar lighter is augmented with a second auxiliary power outlet conveniently mounted up in the dash to the right of the climate control switches. controls are big and easy to reach and manipulate. The instrument array is new, with large, round speedometer and tachometer, bracketed by oil pressure and fuel level gauges to the left and transmission temperature (on trucks with automatics) and coolant temperature gauges to the right. Optional power-adjustable pedals 120) are helpful for short-stature drivers (many women, for example), allowing them to sit a safer distance from the airbag in the steering wheel. switches for the optional trailer brake controller and towcommand are integrated into the lower dash beneath the drive-selector knob and stereo control panel, much nicer than attaching a controller with velcro or duct tape. 2012 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New engines, more models. introductionsmooth and quiet, the ford f-150 is comfortable on bumpy streets around town, over rugged terrain at construction sites, around farms and over utility roads, and on the open highway. Its steering is nicely weighted and requires little correction on the highway making it nice for long cross-country tows. All are highly capable trucks, even those loaded with luxury features. The f-150 was completely redesigned for 2009. For 2011, the f-150 received a new engine lineup and electric-assist steering on all but 6. 2-powered crew cabs. For 2012, the lariat limited model is no longer offered, but one of the nine f-150 versions should be close enough. a new fx appearance package is for 2012 f-150 fx2 and fx4 models that includes 20-inch wheels and lots of flat-black trim inside and out. All 2012 f-150 4wd models can now be flat-towed behind another vehicle, like a motorhome or larger construction truck. Yet even the least-expensive f-150 isn't boring; it leaves room for customization, does the work required, and keeps overhead down. with one of the deepest beds in the segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,060 pounds; most versions carry 1,550-2,100 pounds. Any cab model f-150 can be optioned to tow more than 11,000 pounds; the range varies from 5,500-11,300 pounds. (the ford super duty line of heavy-duty pickups is covered in a separate new car test drive review.) two v8 and two v6 engines are offered, all with 6-speed automatic transmissions. Standard on 2wd is a 302-hp 3. 7-liter v6. Other choices include a 360-hp 5-liter v8, the only engine offered on every cab/bed combination, a 411-hp 6. 2-liter v8 on supercrew short beds, and a 365-hp twin-turbo 3. 5-liter v6 on all but regular cab short beds. So it has to stay competitive: the standard v6 is more powerful than any other pickup v6 and the same horsepower as chevy's 1. 1-liter-larger v8; the 6. 2 offered in crew cabs and raptor is more powerful than any half-ton pickup engine; it's the only pickup that comes with a 6-speed automatic in every model. Supercab trucks add higher fx and lariat trim to choices plus svt's raptor, and a short-bed option (about 5. 5 feet). A long-bed supercab is available only with the heavy-duty package. The supercrew f-150, available with either the short bed or standard bed, drops the stx grade and adds king ranch and platinum derivatives while harley-davidson is supercrew short bed only. the f-150 xl 22,990) is a standard bed, regular cab two-wheel drive. This is typically about $1,700 and required to get the maximum payload rating about 1,000 pounds heavier than standard f-150. It includes stouter parts underneath and 7-lug 17x7. 5 inch wheels. f-150 xlt 27,690) adds chrome for bumpers and trim, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, automatic headlamps, carpeting, cruise control, power windows and locks, and better cloth upholstery. All manner of options are available on the xlt, including three wheel diameters, tailgate step, cargo management and towing equipment. f-150 fx4 37,480) and fx2 33,900) come with a 5-liter v8, black grille and body-colored bumpers, trim and mirrors. Chrome trim and bumpers highlight monotone paint, and the lariat adds heated mirrors with signal repeaters and auto-dimming on the driver's and inside, dual-zone climate control, heated power leather seats with driver memory, leather wheel with redundant audio controls, tow package, sync, trip computer, and power adjustable pedals. Options include 20-inch wheels, heated/cooled front seats, sony sound and navigation, trailer brake controller, rear camera and park sensors, and moonroof. f-150 king ranch 42,515) is like a lariat with a different attitude. It adds two-tone paint and kr badges, unique wheels, mesh chrome grille, chaparral leather heated and cooled power captain's chairs with driver memory, running boards, and power folding, heated, signal outside mirrors with chrome caps. Options are essentially limited to engines, a locking differential, alternative axle ratios, 20-inch wheels, sony sound and navigation systems, moonroof, chrome tube running boards and remote start. f-150 platinum supercrew 44,235) gets a unique satin chrome grille, body-color bumpers and wheel lip moldings, 20-inch wheels, power-deploy/retract running boards, satin chrome tailgate trim, tuxedo-stitched leather power captain's chairs, wood grain and brushed aluminum trim, rain-sensing wipers, power folding/heated mirrors, and unique console. It comes only with the 411-hp 6. 2-liter v8. Unique long-travel high-performance suspension, wheels and tires, and aggressive bodywork set it apart from any other f-150. A front camera is offered for seeing close-in obstacles or drops obscured by the hood. the f-150 option list is comprehensive and, although simplified in recent years, can still resemble the tax code to the uninitiated; there are, for example, many option codes for running boards and trailer towing mirrors. Most options are dependent on the model and other options, and many features are standard on more expensive models or go that way with engine upgrades. In addition, prices of options often vary by trim level. all prices listed above are just a starting point for the trim level. In many cases these upgrades add more standard equipment and/or a larger engine. With nearly 900,000 annual sales, the f-150 has been the best-selling vehicle (car or truck) in america for 21 consecutive years. now, they've thrown away the old formula and created a brand new f-150 from the ground up. ford admits the new f-150 is bigger, heavier, and more expensive to build than the wildly successful previous version. It is also the best-handling, quietest, most car-like full-size pickup truck in the history of the world. All of the new f-150 models feature all-new interiors that show attention to detail. The seats vary, but all are comfortable and supportive. Each boasts its own interior style and features engines, suspensions and cab configurations designed to meet specific needs. It features an all-new work-truck interior and comes with all the basics such as 40/20/40 bench seats in vinyl or cloth, an all-plastic dashboard, a black grille and 17-inch steel wheels. Xl is available in regular cab or supercab styles. An f-150 xl regular cab 2wd automatic retails for $21,215, while a long-wheelbase (145-inch) 4x4 is priced at $24,855. stx is sportier than the xl, with a body-colored grille surround for the black bar grille, and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. Stx comes in styleside (flat) and flareside (fendered) body styles, in regular cab or supercab, with either a 6. 5-foot or a 5. 5-foot cargo box. An audiophile sound system with subwoofer and six-disc cd changer is optional. An stx starts at $22,215. (manufacturer's suggested retail prices do not include the destination charge of $795.) xlt is ford's volume model and comes with its own egg crate grille style. A premium cloth interior is standard on the bench seats or optional captain's chairs. The xlt instrument panel gets more flash than either the xl or stx dash. Supercrew and supercab versions offer power rear windows. The xlt comes with the new overhead rail console system and fog lamps when ordered as a 4x4. Xlt supercab 4x4 4. 6-liter v8 automatic retails for $30,085 msrp. fx4 is a specialty 4x4 off-road model. Fx4 comes only in a stepside version with special chrome interior trim and markings, and a floor console with floor shifter. Fx4 is available in regular cab, supercab and supercrew body styles with either 5. 5-foot styleside or 6. 5-foot flareside or styleside bed designs (no 8-foot bed). The standard engine is the 300-horsepower 5. 4-liter 3-valve-per-cylinder v8, which ford says has the best fuel consumption of any v8 engine it has ever built. The fx4 has its own instrument package as do the rest of the models, with carbon mesh accents on the metallic dashboard. Captain's chairs in cloth or leather and the audiophile system are optional, and 18-inch cast aluminum wheels are optional. An f-150 fx4 supercab 4x4 5. 4-liter v8 automatic retails for $32,185. lariat is the luxury model and, for the time being, sits at the top of the line. Lariat has its own grille design and comes standard with 18-inch wheels. It amplifies the all-new interior with black-on-cream instrumentation, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power adjustable floor pedals, an in-dash message center, and climate control. Heated power leather captain's chairs are optional. Lariat 2wd models are available in all three body styles, but 4x4 versions are only available with styleside fenders. The nearest competitor has only 12 variations, a fact that ford hopes will bring more people into its dealerships. In addition to the 26 variants of the f-150 within the five model ranges, there are dozens of options,. walkaroundall ford f-150s now have the front window style popularized on the f-250 and f-350 super duty pickups: a sharp cut in the forward part of the door sheet metal that drops away to allow much clearer viewing of the large rearview mirrors on both sides. the whole nose is shaped more squarely, the grilles are larger and bolder, the bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is more sculpted, and every bed, no matter which length or style, is two inches taller than previous beds to give more margin when hauling larger cargoes. It's the seven-crossmember skeleton onto which everything else bolts, and accounts for quite a bit of the nearly 675 pounds more weight of the new f-150 compared to the old truck. The frame is nine times more resistant to twisting and 50 percent more resistant to bending than the old c-shaped frame. the front suspension is a completely new double-wishbone style for both 2wd and 4wd versions. The rear suspension now has outboard, rather than inboard, shock absorbers to control the rear end of the truck better in quick maneuvers, along with wider, heavier three-inch leaf springs. the steering has been changed to a heavy-duty power-assisted rack-and-pinion system. The ford truck folks committed only one unpardonable by us: the clear plastic over the instrument pod is way, way too reflective and makes most of the instruments difficult to see in bright sunlight. Ford says that, between these two things, the 5. 4-liter engine, which makes a nice, round 300 horsepower and 335 foot-pounds of torque, is also the fuel-stingiest engine the company has ever tested.
